The genesis of the idea is documented in the Amazon Prime movie “All or Nothing” (link here: http://a.co/7Uq2AFK ) , where the band “needed a drummer” for a last minute show and decided to try something a bit different with the 2 weeks to prepare.
Essentially, Criss Cheatham, August Chroistopher’s frontman, recorded himself playing drums along to all the songs on video with a black back drop. The audio was all mixed and edited into the video for the band to project on a big white screen (just like a movie). The live band would then play along with the drummer on the screen. To say there “trainwrecks” is an understatement! But the gig was fun enough to keep trying to make it better and better. Once the band acquired a live FT drummer, the virtual drummer show became a side project. Cheatham is always tweaking things to add songs and make it look more lifelike.
This has since evolved into a full show with interaction, movie clips from the documentary, comedy and a few backing tracks to allow Cheatham to perform solely along with the virtual drummer. It’s a one-man show by definition, but not the way you would normally visualize it!
Now, with the technology of an LED wall and setting the drummer up to scale (actual size on stage), at first glance, you will see a front man and drummer on stage, possibly not even realizing this drummer is virtual. The “duo” performs mostly songs from the AC catalogue, but also has a few cover songs in the set, some B-roll sketches and even a few corny commercials to spice up the fun!
